The BMW Championship heads to Colorado and the scenic Castle Pines Golf Club, where the top 50 players in the FedEx Cup standings will battle it out as they try to make it to Georgia for the Tour Championship. A reminder of the playoff format: The top 50 after last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship are qualified for this week’s BMW Championship. The top 30 from the BMW Championship will move on to compete for the FedEx Cup at the Tour Championship.
Scottie Scheffler still holds an almost 1,500-point lead on Xander Schauffele as he tries to tighten his grip on a FedEx Cup title. Nick Dunlap’s fantastic performance at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where he finished T5, saw him leap up inside the top 50 in the FedEx Cup rankings, allowing his season to continue. Tom Kim’s struggles down the stretch saw him fall out of the top 50 and end his season earlier than he would have wanted.
There are four players outside of the top 30 that I think have the best shot at playing their way into the Tour Championship: Tommy Fleetwood, Will Zalatoris, Austin Eckroat and Dunlap. Fleetwood has had a very good season, and it surprises me that he is only in 31st this week. Zalatoris spoke of wanting to end his season on his own terms before the Wyndham Championship, and he showed some real progress this past week at the St. Jude Championship, where he finished T12 and gained strokes across the board. Dunlap’s season has been one for the storybooks as he won on the as an amateur and as a professional.
Castle Pines Golf Club was the former host course for The International from 1986 to 2006. Only one golfer in the field has experience at this golf course — Adam Scott — but it came way back in 2000 when he was a PGA Tour rookie.
